Built by anglers who fish this coast

Fish or Pass is a daily report card for Southern California saltwater fishing — an honest read on whether the day’s worth the fuel, the early alarm, and the bait.

The problem we’re solving

Fishing here is expensive no matter how you do it. A private-boat run burns fuel and a dawn wake-up. A charter fare isn’t cheap. Even a pier or shore session costs you bait and a morning. The hard part was never casting — it’s deciding whether today is even worth it, and where.

Most people answer that with a gut feel, a few scattered reports, and hope. We thought the whole of what’s known about this ocean should be able to answer it better than a guess.

What Fish or Pass is

It’s a Bite Score — a single, honest read on the conditions for every patch of water, for the species you care about, updated daily. Tap the map, get a report card and a one-word verdict: Catching, Fishing, or Pass. No jargon, no false promises.

The score pulls from the whole picture — records and history, marine science, live ocean data, and how these fish actually behave on this coast. It’s not one person’s hunch, and it’s deliberately not marketed as magic. See how the score works.

How we think about it

Three things keep us honest, and we won’t compromise them:

  • It’s a report card, not a promise. The ocean writes its own calendar. We tell you what the conditions look like — never “odds,” never “guaranteed.”
  • Real seasons, real water. We operate on how this coast actually fishes. No invented counts, no hype.
  • Safety and the rules come first. The score is never a substitute for a NOAA forecast, your own seamanship, or current CDFW regulations and marine-protected-area boundaries.

Who’s behind it

Fish or Pass is built and operated by Set Sale Marine out of Newport Beach, California — the same crew behind the vessel-data partnership that helps power the score. Different brand, same coast, same obsession with getting it right.
