Oceanside

Why it fishes

Oceanside sits partway between LA and San Diego, and its edge is offshore access. When the warm water and the paddies move in, Oceanside boats get a clean, fairly short run out to the blue for tuna and dorado, and a straight shot at San Clemente Island for yellows and seabass.

You don’t have to run offshore to bend a rod, though. The Carlsbad and Oceanside kelp and the local reefs hold calico, bass and barracuda close to the harbour — an easy short-range morning when you don’t want the long haul.

What you’ll chase

Leaving Oceanside, on any given week you could tangle with:

The grounds within range

• San Clemente Island

  A committed run offshore to island structure — yellowtail, white seabass and calico around the kelp and boilers.

• The offshore banks

  The 277 and the water off the beach where paddies and tuna show on a warm push in summer and fall.

• Carlsbad & Oceanside kelp

  Close-in kelp and reef — calico, sand bass and barracuda for a quick short-range trip.

• Local hard bottom

  Reef and structure off North County for rockfish when the season is open.

When it’s good

Oceanside comes alive with the warm water. Yellowtail work the kelp and the island from spring into fall, and the offshore tuna-and-dorado game peaks on the summer-and-fall warm push. The local kelp fishes best in the warm months and slows through winter.
